Help with phone signal in remote places ?

I have a verzion droid ( the 3G one ) ( very first one to come out ) and we are going to a remote area in Colorado where phone service is lost after a while.I was curious if there was some sort of setting you could run on to maybe enhance the connection so you can get signal ? Or if you could buy something for it ? And information would be great . Thanks
