Why would America be in Libya in regards to oil?

I was talking to a friend of mine, and she was telling me that a major reason why we are in Libya is because of oil. This is not the first time I have heard this, I have also heard this with Kuwait and Iraq. Whether or not you think this is why we entered Libya is besides the point, I want to know what benefit is there for the United States military being in oil rich countries?
